Living in his thoughts,
The Lord doesn't
Feel rejected when the world
Pays Him no attention.
Bullets fired over Hitler
Didn't bother The Lord in 1944.
The One who abides in peace
Isn't what men
Fight for.

What is all
You can't reject.
Every look you take
Is a sight of it.
To this verse there's no anti-verse.
No part of you has any alternative
But to sense it utterly.
Words of denial are variations
On a theme composed
Like the howling
And whining of dogs
And the laughing
Of hyenas.

The soldier
Who's just fallen in battle
Is a fetus just aborted
By its mother.
Today people argue over
What is just.
The radio chat never ceases.
In ancient Babylon
People were the same as they are
Today.
Ooh! Ooh!
Ooohwooo!
Where it's at is just now!
From age to age
The heathen rage.

4. Direct Hit
Archimedes
Remained in his heaven
Even as Syracuse
Was falling.
The soldiers
Were preoccupied
With killing, looting, and burning,
Even as The Master was preoccupied
With his mathematical reckoning.
Such work
Remains alive in us
And in our descendants
Without diminution
From the moment
It is first executed.
