In 1956
I went to see my opthamologist.
He had me lie down on a soft mat
In a darkened room.
He put eye drops in each eye
And I lay there for ten minutes.
During this time I envisioned
The standard form of a quadratic equation.
I saw how to derive the formula
defining both of the roots.
I’d not understood this derivation before.
Now I saw the pattern clearly.
Then the opthamologist came in
And inspected my eyes.
That was all there was to it.
I put my glasses back on and left.

Two blocks away
Two blocks away, while walking home
As I passed through the public park
I met a man who said
“Hey. I
Just got out of Leavenworth.
Could you spare fifty cents?”
My thoughts were suddenly
Turned from self-absorption.
I reached in my pocket
And handed him a dollar.
That was all there was to it.
He took my money and I left.
