A Master walked on campus and
Found a student alone, there,
Just sitting on the grass.

"What is the sine?"  The student asked?
"I just can't understand it."
The master said,
"Open your book and read."
The student said,
"I've tried that again and again.
The words just have no meaning."

The master said,
"What has meaning for you
If words have no meaning?"
The student said, 
"It's just one word I can't understand.
I don't understand the sine."

The master said,
"If the sine is defined using other words,
And the sine is the only word you don't
Understand, then to understand the sine
You just read the words used to define
The sine.  Then you understand the sine."

The student answered,
"That sounds true enough.  So I must
not understand something else.
Can you help me find it?"

"What is it you don't understand
besides the sine?" Asked the master.

"I don't understand how you found me."
Replied the student.

"I was once very perplexed, myself,"
Said the master.  "Words baffled me.
People were as Olympic skaters and
Whenever I skated I lost my balance and
Fell on the ice and people laughed.
And people perceived that I was a danger
to other skaters who might bump into me
after I fell in their way.
So people told me to leave the skating
Pond.  And so I was often seen alone,
Sitting just like yourself."

"So in my physical appearance you saw
The image of your youth?"
Asked the student.

"Yes," said the master.  "And with luck
In years you will have become wiser
Even than The Buddha."

"How could that ever be?" 
Asked the student.

"By failing to master 
The Buddha's culture, yet surviving
Even so,"

"And by failing to master the teachings
Of any other man considered ideal."
Continued the master.

"Is that how you became wise?"
The student asked.

Then two laughing and joking young men
Came close, and the earnest student
popped out of his reverie.
The master had vanished
Like a puff of smoke.

The student opened his math book
And read once again the words used
With precision to define the sine
Of an angle.

Surprisingly, the meaning was
Crystal clear!  

It occurred to the student then
That this was the sign of an angel,
And that it was the removal of
A mental block which enabled him to
Understand what he couldn't understand
Before.

He saw then that if he could
Remove all his mental blocks
He would become
A master.

Kabir was a wise man
Who had funny things to say.
Like Mother Goose 
He made folks laugh.
He saw the learned person
Presiding over callow students look
Like Humpty Dumpty
Perched so high 
Upon some wall of indifference, yes
Indifference
To each of the King's horses and
To each of the King's men.

This was before the end
Of some Watergate or
Some Stargate 
Fantasy.

Why don't 
The children
Ever learn?
